WHAT MAKES AN EXTRAORDINARY RECRUITER

Before getting to the point, there are some facts which need to be mentioned straight at the start:

RECRUITER facts

No matter what line of business you are in, or which job you hold, you can't do it successfully without putting your heart into it. In other words, you have to love what you do. There is no greater joy than doing the work that suites you best. As Steve Jobs once said, quote "The only way to do great work is to love what you do and do what you love". No matter what or who you are, a fireman, a doctor, an accountant, a real estate officer or even a garbage truck driver, if you love your work, you'll be great at what you do. The same applies to being a recruiter. In order to be good, you need to like what you do. If not, find a different occupation fast because every minute more spent with your client is a consequence to you and your employer (source: prof.dr. Teresa Amabile, prof. dr. Steven Kramer - 'The Progress Principle').

"The only way to do great
work is to love what you do
and do what you love."

Every good recruiter has its own concept when it comes to doing business. The same apply to their customers. One would say that trust is the first skill a recruiter should posses and builds a relationship on. This is not entirely true. Without the skill of knowledge, trust simply cannot be gained but in the long term, trust and the ability to cultivate a relationship is the key issue to a successful partnership with your client. Besides this, the basic skills that a recruiter needs to hold are hunters mentality, big picture thinking, strong follow-up skills, listening, needs to have a consultative nature and a personal approach. If we were to add all this up and find a generic skill, it would definately be 'people orientated'.

8 Skills recruiters should have:

  •  Strong sales skills
  •  Ability to cultivate and build relationships
  •  Hunter’s mentality
  •  Big-picture thinking
  •  Strong follow-up
  •  Listening
  • Consultative in nature
  • Personable and approachable
